22 Sep The magic of using home grown vegetation on hand made felt!
Were you aware that eucalyptus gives a totally substantive dye on felt, wool, silk and any protein based fabric without the need to use traditional powdered mordants? It’s washable, colourfast and stands the test of time!
I’ve recently made myself a new coat combining an eco printed body with naturally dyed sleeves and collar. The felt is a combination of merino and silk, all the various different eucalyptus leaves that I used to print it with are home grown (in Ireland) and the natural dye was made from E. gunnii ‘Azura’ leaves with a handful of E. nichollii, both red printers. At the same time I made up another dye bath using mixed leaves, that gave a warm gold colour!
